Two Gravities
Chapter 2
Kim hunkered down in the shadows at the base of the tree where two large agave plants partially hid her from view. Once shed gotten back outside, shed been a little distracted by the angry yelling coming from the front side of the building, and had crept up to take a look, blatantly ignoring advice to the contrary coming from Wade. He just wanted her to be on her way before someone realized the buildings security had been compromised. Kim respected his input, and promptly disregarded it.
Normally, the hacker wasnt too worried about people picking up on his tracks, especially not when he was dealing with the majority of the businesses in New Eden. There were exceptions to that though; he stayed out of the police mainframe and Hench Cos operating system. Tonight he might have to add another to the list, at least, after a little more research into the background of this D. Lipsky. It had thrown him for a loop when the firewalls in the system suddenly re-activated, and while Wade liked challenges, he didnt always appreciate surprises.
So, with that in mind, he felt that it wouldnt be in their best interest for Kim to stick around any longer than absolutely necessary, and engaging in eavesdropping didnt quite qualify. Not that the redhead actually ever did something if he told her to, of her own accord anyway.
All he could do was listen in and wait for her curiosity to be sated, and pray that she was able to leave as unnoticed as shed entered.
Originally, it had been Kims plan to follow the building around to the back, and take one of the side roads to get to the Red Line. Unfortunately, the road had been blocked by a construction site, and the electrified fence surrounding it curtailed that particular notion. So, instead she would have to leave pretty much the same way shed arrived, skirting the lights by using the foliage in the park.
By the time she figured all that out, the firefighters had started to leave and the sound of a high powered engine drew her attention. At the time, half hidden by the corner of the building, Kim watched, rapt as the aforementioned car slid to a stop and the driver stormed out.
Even backlit by the small spotlights surrounding the fountain, it was plain enough to see that the driver was a woman, mostly since the clothes she wore were tight enough that her curves were firmly outlined in silhouette. As the woman stalked up the stairs toward one of the guards, Kim had been able to get a better look since the lights were no longer directly behind.
The woman was clad head to toe in a dark uniform, somewhat resembling those the guards were wearing, but much more formfitting. Also, her suit bore a bright green pinstripe down each arm and leg, whereas the guards were nothing but black and gray. With her standing in front of one of the guards, Kim put her height at an inch or two under six feet, a rough guesstimate at best. However, the one thing that really stood out, in the runners opinion, was the womans extraordinarily pale complexion, which she only caught glimpses of through the wavy curtain of the womans midnight black tresses.
Even from her hiding spot, Kim could hear the womans voice carry as she tore into what appeared to be her subordinates. Since the angry woman was one of the few people nearly facing her direction, Kim waited until the yelling died down, and finally, when the woman turned her anger on the rest of the crowd Kim made her move, dashing to her current hiding place amid the thick leaves of the agave.
Wades voice crackled in her ear as she kept one eye on the crowd and the other on the best route to get her out of there. Got some cross chatter from Henchs goons. Sounds like the two units that were out after your buddy from the 33s. Theyre on her tail, and there might be another unit dispatched. Its hard to tell because Im only picking up burst transmissions.
Im kinda on the other side of the city right now, Kim hissed.
Hey, Im just keeping you updated like you asked, remember?
Yeah, yeah. Look, keep tabs on Monique and sitch me once I get out of here. Ill try and catch the green line, just let me know if they move out of that area so I dont take the wrong train.
Sure you want to do this Kim?
Monique already owes me big for the shit she pulled, and if I can get this to hang over her head too, well, Id sleep better at night knowing shed probably start losing sleep over it.
That doesnt sound like your kind of thing. But, its your call.
You know me, Im pretty laid back about the whole revenge thing, but what she did was too much, I cant just let it go. I don’t need that hanging over my head forever.
Well, like I said, its your call. I got your back, whatever you decide.
Thanks Wade. Its always good to know someone takes my best interests to heart in this city. Now, let me get out of here before, Kim paused, wondering why it felt like someone was staring at her. She snapped her attention back to the corner of the building, and her eyes widened in surprise; two figures were headed her way around the edge of the building, the one in the lead was striding at a very quick pace, almost working up to a jog, and the one behind was hesitantly catching up. Crap, Ive been spotted. See if you can find me a good route between here and the Green Line, the redhead spoke in a rush as she stood up from her crouch and vaulted over the prickly bushes.
Okay Kim, Im looking at the streets right now. I think if you skirt the edge of the construction site, you can make it to the nearest aqueduct. You wont have much cover, but it runs south straight under one of the stations.
The courier was already picking up speed as she angled herself toward the electrified fence, hopefully this would be just risky enough to deter her pursuers. Sounds like a plan. Im on it.
And indeed, the chase was on.
—
Shego bit back a curse as soon as the figure burst from the trees at a good clip, heading north along the road toward the back of the building. The whole area back there was under construction and most of the street lights werent yet connected to the city power grid. This far into the business zone, the surrounding buildings, while not as tall as the Docs, were no less impressive, especially when it came to blocking out the ambient lights of the city. It would be damn near pitch black down by the construction pit, which is exactly where the fleet shadow appeared to be heading.
Hurry up, lard ass, the ebony haired woman shouted out over her shoulder as she heard Franks footfalls start to drop back. Shit, I shouldve taken the car, she muttered to herself, despite knowing that there were too many side streets and alleys down this way enabling a person on foot to easily get away from a single vehicle, no matter the muscle under the hood. As she started pounding the pavement, Shego wished not for the first time, that shed bought a motorcycle instead. Then again, she was rarely put in this position, thats what the hired help was for.
She flipped open her cell phone in mid stride, pressing the speed dial, Listen up, get everyone back inside, checking the labs. I think something shady just went down and I want to hear about it before you know who, Shego snapped the phone shut as soon as she heard the beginnings of a confirmation. With that out of the way, she pocketed the cell, pushing her legs to go just a little faster. Whoever she was chasing had a lead and the gap didnt appear to be closing. Up ahead, even in the gloom, she could make out the outlines of the new facility the Doc was having built. Around it, the shape of the seven meter fence was only just visible against the iron and steel backdrop, drawing rapidly closer.
Nearly a minute later found the leather clad woman dashing along the edge of the fence, precariously close to the metal links that hummed threateningly. Shed rather not be pressing her luck, but the way the construction site was set up, it blocked off the street and continued for several hundred meters until it almost brushed up against an adjacent building, several feet above street level. She was currently doing her best to catch up to the figure that had chosen to take the high ground, running as full tilt along the precarious ledge that ran parallel to the fence with less than three feet of clearance, and a dozen more of sheer drop on the street side, with the ledge itself being a foot wide, at that was if Shego was feeling generous in her assessment. She didnt care to fall to either side, especially at the speed she was running, it was all she could do to just kept her eyes on her target, and moved as quick as she dared, placing one foot in front of the other.
Gratefully, the end of the ledge was not too far off she realized when the shadow she was after suddenly disappeared, dropping out of sight. As the head of Lipsky security made it to the edge, she found herself grinning. The ledge dropped down into a narrow alley with only one exit, which she could see her target sprinting towards. Shed been worried that the road might branch closer to the drop. But, it hadnt and the game was still on. Bracing herself she leapt down, tucking into a roll as she hit the ground, and let the momentum bring her back to her feet, taking off down the thankfully dry alley.
Shego skidded to a halt at the mouth of the alleyway, glaring down the street that it opened to, the empty street. Whipping her head back and forth, she muttered curses under her breath. Where the hell could they have gone? The dark haired woman could have sworn that theyd turned right, but there was only a dead end where the street met the back of a squat two story building. Directly across the road from the alley was another dead end, and to the left was well lit, for this area, and empty of fleeing persons, shadow or otherwise. So, she turned back to stare at the little building. There was short U-Move-It van backed up to it, but the hood was facing her, she could see around to both sides, and underneath from her vantage point.
The raven haired woman took another look at the surrounding buildings, and none of them had windows close to the ground floor, none that were open anyway, so they hadnt gone that way. Her gaze traveled back to the squat building and the van. The van wasnt very tall, but neither was the building, though there was a good ten feet difference between the two. Running a hand through her hair, she considered it. If she was wrong, shed already wasted too much time, and probably lost the chance to get her hands on whoever had been poking around the docs place.
Shit, this better work. Shego took off sprinting towards the hood of the van and leapt, letting her momentum move her up and across the hood, the cab and onto the top. From there, she regarded the roof of thee building with a calculating eye. The van was almost backed up right against the wall, and while she couldnt quite reach it at a standing jump, if she ran and pushed up off the wall, she just might be able to snag it. Shego went for it.
The cityscape past the two story building was considerably less crowded. The buildings only ran along one side of the main road, and a canal bordered the other. Narrowing her eyes she thought she caught movement along the canal. Not wanting to miss a chance, she looked down, scanning the edge of the roof, trying to find a way down, until her eyes lit upon a drain pipe running down the length of the wall.
Fifteen seconds later found her nearing the canal. In the ambient light, she could just make out a fleeing form heading away down along the base of the canal. Staring up along the canal, Shego looked for some way to head off her quarry at the pass, and she found it in the form of a series of overhangs about half a mile away. You just think youre home free, the leather clad woman grinned, pushing herself to sprint along the walkway that lined the top of the canal slope. All she had to do now was reach the bridge first.
—
Kim slid feet first down the steep incline that lined the aqueduct, feet tapping the ground after a good fifteen meters. Dusting off the back of her cargo pants, she paused to look back up the slope in the direction that shed come from. There was no sign of her pursuit, though shed been surprised at how well the other woman had been keeping up. A hint of a smile played at the edge of her lips, but the pony tailed courier turned away and resumed a steady pace, she still had a train to catch.
Occasionally, she shot glances over her shoulder, but there was never further sign of her dark haired chaser. However as Kim neared the first overpass, she thought she heard the echoing slap of footfalls from somewhere up above. Thinking it was a fluke, she continued on, pressing into the darkness under the bridge. Ahead, shafts of moonlight cut down through drainage holes on the underside of the ceiling above. For just a moment, one of the beams flickered as something passed by on the top of the bridge.
The redhead slowed to a jog, straining her ears. The underpass was still and silent save for the rhythmic sound of her own breathing. She certainly didnt hear any cars passing by. Her jog slowed further until she was barely making forward progress. Wade, how much time until the next train? I think I might have to deal with a little issue here.
No sweat Kim. There hasnt been any more news from Hench Co., and your ride doesnt pass that station for another thirty four minutes, and its uh, the voice in her ear paused, just over two miles north of your current position. Youve got a few minutes to kill. Plus, if for some reason you miss it, the next Green Line rolls past fifteen minutes after this one. Do what you have to do. Ill let you know if anything changes.
Please and thanks, Kim whispered, sliding up against one of the support pillars. She hadnt seen any more movement past the drains, but it had been too coincidental to be anyone else, especially since it was well past rush hour in this district.
Taking a look back the way shed come, she didnt see anything down at that end of the underpass. A glance forward met with the same result. Still, she remained where she was, flattened against the pillar, straining her ears to catch any stray sound of movement that would let her know she wasnt just being paranoid.
Kim waited motionless for nearly a minute, and when nothing appeared to be moving or making stray sounds, she let out a breath she hadnt realized shed been holding. It was probably just her nerves settling down after seeing those weird bodies back in the lab. Honestly, she was probably going to have dreams about that for a week. Wiping the sweat from getting in her eyes with the back of a gloved hand, she relaxed, ready to keep going, which is probably what saved her from having her head caved in when a booted foot erupted out of the darkness, hooking around the pillar right toward her head. Kim caught the brunt of the blow on her raised arm, even as the force behind the kick slammed her hard against the concrete pillar.
Before she could even consider retaliating, the pressure disappeared. Staggering, the courier fell away from the pillar, trying get back out into the open spaces in an attempt to draw her attacker out of hiding. The redhead flexed her hand, trying to get the throbbing to stop along her forearm. She was just glad that her head hadnt struck the pillar, even if it felt like shed taken a bat to the arm, she was still conscious. Small favors and all that.
Youre pretty damn quick, Ill admit. Still, Im surprised you blocked that, a throaty voice reached Kim from the shadows gathered on the far side of the pillar. I was going to ask you what you were doing, creeping away after that damn fire alarm went off, but you know you just had to keep fucking running, the voice rose a little as the woman that Kim recognized stepped out from behind the concrete. In the dim, almost non-existent light, it was almost as if the womans extraordinarily pale face was floating in the darkness due to the black leather she was wearing.
Though once Kim got a better look, she could also barely make out the green pinstripes running down the sides of the leather suit. A suit that despite which, uttered only the faintest of whispers as the pale woman purposefully closed the distance between the two. Kim was positive that what amounted to a body glove made of leather should be making a lot more noise.
For her part, the courier just shrugged, it was pretty much in her job description. Its what I do. Usually its no big. Most people cant keep up anyway.
Like I said, youre pretty fast. But, taking off in a straight line isnt the smartest thing when youre being chased, the dark haired woman was slowly circling Kim at this point. Hmm, she put a hand to her chin. I thought you were some skinny twig of a boy back when you were running along the fence. Guess I was a little of the mark.
We cant all be perfect, Kims eyebrow twitched at the insult. I was pretty sure one of those overweight eyesores you have for security was somehow managing to stay on my tail.
The comment failed to get a rise out of the other woman. Yes, Ill be dealing with those three later, after I turn your ass over to the local precinct. Its been a pretty shitty day so far, so I cant promise youll get there in one piece.
Kim found she didnt like the smile the woman was fixing her with.
I think thats enough chit-chat, and with that said, a black gloved fist blurred right toward the redheads center mass, followed by two more stabbing strikes.
Kim sidestepped the first punch, but the others nearly found their mark, and she was forced to parry them off to the side even as she searched for an opening to exploit, but her attackers guard was too tight. Kim rolled to the side to avoid a follow up roundhouse, and inadvertently found herself back in kicking range amidst a hail of front side and hooking kicks, the last of which ripped at her own guard, giving the pale woman a chance to slip a thrust kick right in, nearly folding the courier in half around the extended leg. The blow launched the redhead backward several feet to land hard on her ass.
Kim groaned, picking herself back up. Shed taken worse from practice falls, just not with a jackhammer slamming into her first. However the redhead managed to get some of the breath shed lost back into her lungs. Kim clenched her fist, glaring at the dark haired woman.
Oh, scary, the pale woman widened her eyes mockingly. Im sorry, that sounded like it hurt. The little princess didnt break a nail did she? Here, let me help you find it, as she spoke, she slid over until she was practically within the slightly shorter womans guard, grabbing Kims belt with one hand and her shirt with the other, twisting for a hip toss.
Kim was still off balance from the impact earlier and the best she could do was scissor her legs around her attackers waist and let the momentum drag them both to the ground. There was a moment of vertigo, and the redhead caught a quick curse of surprise in the taller womans voice as they went down.
Unfortunately, the redhead still hit first and she found out first hand that the other woman weighed more than shed anticipated. The extra weight didnt remain for long, as the woman rolled off of her.
Gotta hand it to you Princess, that little move surprised me, but I think you got the raw end of the deal on this one.
Kim tried to focus on the voice in the dark as she still had little flashed of blue winking in and out of her vision from slamming into the ground. She couldnt really see anything, but she did hear the sudden whistle of cloth in the air, and took that as her cue to roll out of the way. She narrowly avoided the heel of a boot that swung down in an arc to thud into the concrete where her face had been not two seconds prior.
Damn, thought I had you for sure with that one, the taunt floated from somewhere past blue spots.
Kim heard the faint tap of footsteps padding closer, and she pulled herself to her feet once more, bringing her arms up to fend off whatever came first. She parried a snapping kick aimed at her head just as the spots began to clear, and saw the outline of a follow up spinning hook kick which she ducked under. The courier used the brief moment where her opponents back was turned to land two hard rabbit punches to the womans kidneys, and was rewarded with a hard gasp of pain, though it felt like the leather was soaking up most of the blows.
The pony tailed woman decided to press her momentary advantage and as the pale faced woman whipped a blind fist backward; Kim pushed the wayward strike further in the direction it was headed, overextending the punch. The move put the other woman slightly off balance, and Kim thrust her elbow into exposed ribs, and slammed her other palm into the pale womans solar plexus, uncoiling her own body into the strike.
There was a satisfying gush of expelled air, and Kim slipped back as her opponent lurched sideways, nearly falling over, but somehow keeping her feet. When the woman didnt quite topple, Kim took a step back and then darted forward with a leap, aimed feet first at her staggering foe.
Contact was made, and the both of them went crashing to the ground once more, this time the redhead was first to roll away and regained her feet with a slight waver. Shed been in plenty of fights back when she was running with the 33s, but they usually werent knock down drag out fights quite like this one. It didnt help that shed been on the move nearly all day, and it was starting to wear on her.
Kim took the time to catch her breath and massage the throbbing pain in both her right arm and the ache in her gut from the kick shed taken full on. She knew she was in for a really rough night if she tried to catch the Green Line at this point. Kim didnt quite feel up to another fight, especially with the heat that the Hench goons started to pack over the past year or so since the riots.
A groan from somewhere to her right brought the couriers attention back to the matter at hand. She couldnt quite see, but from the sound of it, the woman was getting back up. Cant you just stay down? Ive, Kim sucked in a breath, Ive got places to be.
Shut it princess. Im not even on the clock right now, so quit your bitching, surprisingly, the pale woman almost sounded recovered.
Kim just put it down to the leather suit the woman was wearing. She was more than certain her own tank top had done little to prevent the bruises and scrapes she could feel running up and down her arms at this point.
If youre not even working right now, then why the hell are you getting in my way? Kim prompted.
Hah, Im a workaholic, what can I say,” the pale woman chuckled a bit into the darkness as if she’d said something highly amusing. “Now, get over here so I can finish kicking your bony ass. It appeared the woman wasnt actually waiting for Kim because her voice was much closer all of the sudden.
Kim found herself dodging a series of quick jabs, and ducking under a haymaker that whipped through her ponytail as she dipped. She also found that her dodge had been anticipated and scrambled to bring her palms up to check the knee that was rocketing toward her lowered face. The redhead dropped into a leg sweep, hoping to catch her off guard, but the ebony haired woman stepped over the darting leg and tried to put a fist through Kims head for her trouble.
The fight continued on for several more minutes, with neither side landing more than glancing blows, nor either woman taking another fall.
Ten minutes later found Kim covered in scrapes and bruises, favoring her right arm which had started to swell from the repeated hits. Her opponent on the other hand was leaning against one of the pillars scant feet away, gingerly cradling her ribs, which had taken more than a fair share of pounding and she was beginning to suspect they might be more than just severely bruised.
The women had separated and agreed to a momentary truce to try and quell the burning in their lungs. Plus, it had started to get a little awkward when theyd found themselves leaning on one another towards the end, still trading hits.
Just another minute, or three, and Ill put you out of my misery, Kim panted.
Fine by me. Dinners cold by now anyway, Shego said, wiping at the sweaty strands of hair that clung to her face. But Im missing my show, so dont take too long getting ready. The pale woman grimaced, clutching her side, now pretty sure at least two of her ribs were close to being fractured. It wasnt a pleasant thought. At least the doc had a good health plan set up.
Five minutes later, neither Kim nor Shego had made a serious attempt to resume the battle, though there was some ferocious glaring going on.
Beyond the edge of the underpass, the night grew darker.
